MV RUBY Huon pine Fishing boat 24 ft by 8 ft beam with wet well. Launched Strahan 1932. Commissioned by Eugene Dalton. Built by Phil Hutchins in Strahan (last shed on left out to Queenstown). Phil's and his wife Elsie had a daughter Ruby who married Eugene. 1 st Owner Eugene Dalton named her Elsie Ruby. She did many trips up the river and outside and Strahan local J Mcdermott recalled some trips down the bay as a boy. He is in his 90's and lives in Strahan. Ruby Dalton nee Hutchins did remarry and still lives in Hobart , did visit her namesake in 2008. Ruby's grandson still lives in Queenstown. MV Elsie Ruby is seen in a 1932 photo moored in Risby Cove in the book The Huon Pine Story. More recently she is featured in Australian Geographic June 98. 2nd Owner Wal Calway about the 40's purchased Ruby but did not use her much because he was seriously discouraged by his friend Maybel Tyler, she hated the water due to losing her sister in the 20's ( Maybel's son Tim our “honey man” still lives in Strahan). Wal may have let ruby founder in Risby cove near the coal barge hulk the Glenn Turk. 3 rd Owner RJ Callow (Pigeon) 50's installed the first Petter's twin diesel the very best and heaviest engine made for boats at the time. 4th Owner Bob Wakefield (DEC) Verna his wife bought Ruby for his 30 th birthday in the 70's. Bob overhauled the gearbox and restored her. She was slipped in Risby Cove and worked on by Bob and Dick Clarke a local shipbuilder. She was blue and white and renamed Ruby J (Joanne is Bob's daughter). Verna and son live inStrahan. 5 th Owner Joe Gaspersic married Joanne Wakefield and purchased Ruby J in 1996. 6 th Owner Michael and Catherine purchased Ruby J at Lettes Bay 2006 and renamed her Ruby our first grandchild is Ruby. Rebuilt gearbox (been underwater) and replaced Petter's with new old one out of a yacht in Launceston (vgc). 2016 finds me disabled to the extent that Ruby needs a younger and or fitter man (or woman). Have a list of spares from the old motor and there is a company supplying the most needed parts in England.Ruby comes with sounder and handheld gps as well as vee berth cushions and very good day bed cushions. Note Ruby is for sale in Strahan Tasmania.
