The New Model KwikKraft 1022 Offshore is the perfect platform for Offshore Game fishing and cruising combined. Her designers call her a sedan, but she’s hardly sedate, cruising at more than 20 knots and topping out just over 30kts. She looks like a flashed-up trailer boat but she runs on diesel, and at six tonnes, she’s a little beyond the average ute’s towing capacity. If we were into 1950s retro we would call her a cabin-cruiser. Stepping aboard, we notice more initial stability than we’d expect from a deep vee. At rest, she’s almost as solid as a flat-bottomed launch. Away from the jetty, the sterndrive endows her with quicker and more positive steering than we’d expect from any flat-bottomed keel-drive launch. Although capable of quick direction changes, the 1022 is large enough to feel ‘big’, so most owners would probably emphasise low-speed manoeuvrability over high-speed agility. There’s plenty of room, and the sidepanels have rod holders and thigh-high padding that’s well-suited to light tackle jigging and bottom-fishing. A pair of aft-mounted rod holders, a built-in fishbox, and a handrail with mountings for baitboard or barbie, convert the swimstep into a practical fishing platform.
