The Barbican 33 was designed by Maurice Griffiths with a shoal draft long keel and centre-plate (for which the designer is well known) and has a reputation as a robust, high quality and seaworthy cruising yacht.  Red Dawn IV has sail number 24 and is therefore about halfway through the production run and was fitted out to a somewhat higher structural standard.   The hull was moulded in 1986 by the Barbican Yacht Construction Co. and was fitted out by the first owner and commissioned in October 1990.  She has white GRP hull and superstructure with full length keel and lifting centre-plate and carries some extra internal lead ballast.  She is equipped with tiller steering with a skeg hung rudder, and the hull is known to have been epoxy coated from new.      The boat is presented in excellent condition with a full cruising inventory and is ready to sail away.  She was prepared earlier this year for a trip through the French Canals to the Mediterranean Sea, and has freshly overhauled and laundered sails, new propeller shaft, cutlass bearing and shaft seals, new rudder heel bearing, new starter motor and has three mast supports for carrying the spars on-board through the Canals.  The centre-plate was replaced in 2010 when the hull was treated with Coppercoat antifouling and is the subject of an article in the February 2011 copy of PBO.  She is well equipped with Radar and chart plotter, Radar reflector, Hasler wind vane steering gear, two auto-helms, Taylors diesel heater, Refrigerator, Gas cooker with two burners oven and grill, spray hood and cockpit tent, 4 man liferaft, Inflatable dinghy with Honda 4 stroke outboard motor.   The layout provides two quarter berths in the fore-cabin that converts to a spacious double, two berths in the main cabin and with a pilot berth to starboard.  She carries a fully battened Main-sail, roller reefing Genoa that had new bearings fitted last year, Staysail, Storm jib and a Cruising chute that flies from a removable bow-sprit.  The ground tackle comprises a 35 lb. CQR main anchor on all chain with a manual anchor winch and the kedge anchor is a fisherman type on chain and rope warp.  The engine is a BMW D 35/2 which produces some 35 HP and drives a 19 in. two blade propeller giving a cruising speed of 5-6 knots and top speed of some 7 knots - it is rather economical and the 25 gallon stainless steel fuel tank gives an excellent cruising range.  Fresh water is carried in two stainless steel tanks located under the berths in the main cabin and has a total capacity of 40 gallons.   She was surveyed in 2011 and the report is available. Red Dawn IV is a much loved and cherished vessel that has been in our ownership for 10 years, and we have enjoyed cruising to the continent on many occasions and attended the Brest Classic Boat Festival in 2008.  The last picture is of her "Toile de Mer" that was presented to the Festival.
