Westerly Pentland 31’6” Bilge keel centre cockpit ketch The good bits:- Robust comfortable shoal draft ketch. Possibly the ideal ‘East Coast’ boat. 5-6 Berths in 3 cabins. Wheel steered with recent new cables and sleeves. Currently in commission with recent antifouling and ready to sail. The three cabin layout gives good accommodation for those with children, privacy for 2 couples or an extremely useful stern cupboard. I have owned her for 14 years and in that time replaced the original 2 cylinder 25 HP Volvo with a used 35 HP Thorneycroft with all new ancillaries including a reconditioned PRM gearbox, tidied interior, replaced galley stove, installed heating, sorted out wiring and fitted additional batteries and charger system, partly re upholstered, replaced sprayhood, painted the hull in Jotun 2 pack paint, overhauled roller furling and replaced genoa and mizzen. She is full Part 1 registered in my name with up to date details including new engine. Engine - Thorneycroft 4 cylinder (Mitsubishi K4D) circa 35 HP with newly reconditioned PRM 120 gearbox (2015), Overhauled injectors (2015), recent stainless steel diesel tank, exhaust hose, muffler, pre and main filters, Speedseal cover to water pump for easy impeller replacement (2016), new cutlass bearing (2016), recent prop shaft & 3 blade prop. Engine spares including belts, filters & impeller. The engine installation is very tidy and professional and gives more than adequate power. Rig – Little used mizzen by Crusader sails. Maxi roach vertically battened roller furling mainsail, roller furling genoa (new 2016 used once). Secondary forestay to fly orange storm jib (used once) and large somewhat scruffy hank on genoa. Easy to sail without having to leave cockpit. I normally sail single handed or short crewed and the ability to reef or furl on any point of sail is very useful. Original aluminium spars. Spinnaker pole for booming out genoa. Standing rigging was replaced entirely (including all bottle screws) 12 years ago. Rig was removed this year, roller furling overhauled, inspected and a new forestay fitted. Electrics – 3 x 110 AH lead acid batteries in 2 banks with manual changeover. Sterling 2 bank 25 Amp shore power battery charger. Internal lighting, LED tri colour (2016) and low level navigation lights. LED deck lights (2016). Good professional quality switch panel with circuit breakers. Shorepower lead and earth leakage circuit breaker panel. Water – Stainless steel tank, electric pressure pump, hot water via calorifier from engine and 240v immersion heater feeding galley and shower tap in heads. Standby foot pump in heads. Heating – 3Kw Mikuni diesel fired blown hot air heating with outlets to all cabins. The boat is comfortable inside with 2” of snow and ice on deck. Galley – 12V top loading refrigerator, stainless steel 2 burner, grill & oven in gimbals (2014) with 2 x Calor gas bottles in vented cockpit locker, stainless steel sink. Interior – Main cabin upholstery and foam replaced in 2010. Navigation – Standard Horizon GPS chart plotter, Nasa AIS engine, LCD radar, echo sounder with deck and chart repeater, log with deck and chart table repeater, Wind direction and speed, DSC VHF radio (2016), 2 x VHF aerials on main and mizzen masts (2016 -one for VHF one for AIS) FM / AM / LW radio cassette, Autohelm ST 4000. Recent new Plastimo main steering compass. Deck – 2 x Lewmar 44 main winches. 2 x small single speed winches for roller furling and kicker, 2 single speed halyard winches. Manual lewmar anchor windlass with 35lb genuine CQR on all chain rode. Anchor self-stows on the short bowsprit. New sprayhood in 2013. Cockpit dodgers. Heads – Lavac WC with recent sanitation grade hose and rebuilt pump. Rebuild kit for Henderson Lavac pump which is identical to main bilge pump. Shower with drain to bilge. Safety – Plastimo 4 man canister liferaft very out of date but has been stored below so confident it could be serviced for use. 2 x horseshoe life rings, heaving line & quoit, webbing jackstays, 3 fire extinguishers, 12v spotlight and deck plug, manual bilge pump that can be operated from cockpit. Miscellaneous – warps, fenders, buckets, boathooks, cordage, ensign, day shapes, small kedge with chain / warp, odd spares including a couple of stanchion bases, shackles, bottle screws etc. The bad bits:- She has some osmosis. This was largely ‘freckles’ in gelcoat along waterline & anchor locker area. This has been locally ground out and filled when the hull was painted in 2016. She was badly gelshielded by a previous owner and has had some blisters between gelcoat and gelshield. I take a relaxed attitude to the osmosis. It had it when surveyed in 2002 and it got no worse until I ground out blisters and filled in 2016 despite being in commission in the water for all bit 12 weeks in 14 years. Part of stern cabin has had PVC lining removed and painted. The stern cabin and forepeak upholstery is usable but tired. Generally :- I would describe her as presentable and sound. This year she has travelled from Brightlingsea to Medway twice, done the GYC East Coast Cruise and weekend trips to Walton, Blackwater etc. Apart from chewing up a water pump impeller (my fault – I knew it was 10 years old !) it has been totally reliable. Viewing:- She can be inspected most weekends at Brightlingsea (Near Colchester) in Essex. Happy to take you out for a sail if you are serious and we can dry out on hard for survey. More than happy to assist in delivery / deliver but have limited time so whilst Wash to South Coast possible Scotland or Irish Sea probably not.
