Construction The Trapper 500 started life as the C&C 27 and was built in the USA to a Cuthbertson and Cassian design. From 1972 they were built in the UK by Anstley yachts of Poole who then became Trapper Yachts. This model was built in 1979 and was one of the last built by Trapper before the hulls were contracted out to be built by Northshore and became the Trapper 501.Yachting Monthly described the yacht as "a popular all rounder, well balanced and easy to handle"GRP constructed yacht with cast iron flat bottomed keel. This design was to allow yachts to dry out more easily and not get stuck on the bottom. This new design reduced the ballast ratio somewhat from the traditional fin but increased the light wind performance. The rudder extends somewhat from the transom and gives good control. It also pivots 360 degrees allowing the rudder to sit snugly under the hull protecting it when stern to. The underwater area is copper coated. This system negates the need for antifouling year after year. The cockpit is a large yet secure place to be with deep coamings and large stern rails. The seating is teak topped and hides a large locker to starboard for ropes and fenders and a dedicated gas locker opposite on the port side. Reaching the foredeck is easily managed thanks to the wide side decks. further protection comes in the way of double set guard wires and handily placed grab rails.  Anchor locker in the bow with ground tackle and strong point.Engines Currently the saildrive will engage into forward gear but not reverse. The cause of this is as yet unknown and may require removal of the engine to repair. The price of the boat has been reduced to take this into account.Vessel is powered by a reliable and extremely economical inboard diesel Beta engine with saildrive unit. This 10hp model was installed in 1998 to replace the original Dolphin petrol engine. Engine was serviced at the end of the 2014 season and hasn't been used since. Single lever engine control in cockpit next to engine start panel with rev counter. Visual and manual warnings for oil pressure, temperature and charging. Bank of two, 12V batteries both new in the early part of 2014. These are recharged via the engine alternator. 12V switch panel with fuses for interior equipment, navigation lights and navigation aids. Shore power available on a ring main when berthed on a serviced jetty.Sails and Rigging  Masthead sloop rigged yacht with deck stepped, anodised aluminium mast and boom. Stainless steel standing rigging and terylene running rigging with all lines led aft to cockpit. Roller furling system for headsail and slab reefing for mainsail. Vessel rigged for spinnaker including conventional pole.Mainsheet track in cockpit mounted at companionway. Halyard winches mounted either side of companionway and self tailing sheet winches with in handy reach of helm.MainsailFurling GenoaSpinnaker rigging including poleAccommodation and layout This family cruiser can sleep up to 6 persons in a two cabin layout. Forepeak cabin has a double V-berth, the saloon dinette converts to a double with a single berth opposite and a quarter/pilot berth aft. The main saloon is accessed from the companionway. Three steps don and you are standing on the smart teak and holly flooring with the galley to port and the quarter berth/navigation area to starboard. The Galley features a gas fuelled Flavell oven with 2-burner hob and grill, ice box and stainless steel sink with hand pumped fresh water.Dinette area with large table to port with seating for 4 persons. This converts to a sizeable double. Seating area opposite can be used as a decent single with the addition of the trotter box.On the other side of the bulkhead is the heads with marine toilet and holding tank. Adjacent to this behind a protective mesh screen is a multi fuel stove. It should be noted that this has not been used within the present ownership and we have no idea of its functioning.
