18ft sailing yacht, built in 1946 by Brook Marine lowestoft. History Gay Mary was built to a very high standard by Brook Marine LTD, Brook marine constructed motorboats for the admiralty during the war, looking to generate business in peace time they built a pair of 'pocket cruisers' one at 18ft and one at 24ft. Gay Mary was the first built at 18ft, similar in size and appearance to the prolific 2.5t tone Hilliard she is (unlike the Hilliard) a very fast and satisfying yacht to sail. Rig Originally built with a gaff rig she had a new spruce mast built by Combes boatyard in the late 90's changing her to a bermudan rig, with a bumkin added to acomidate a standing backstay. the mast is in perfect condition having bean dry stored since last varnished along with the stainless steel standing rigging. Very good main in white and a second good but faded brown mainsail. Good white jib on bronze roller furling, think it may need some work on the luff but cant remember exactly. bronze merymans bottle screws. some running rigging present along with nice wooden blocks and a couple of lovely bronze ones, bronze horse, fairleads and cleats. Hull. Pitch Pine on Oak frames, Oak deadwood bow and stern. planks in relatively good condition, tiny bit of rot around the left hand chainplates on topside. Planks bellow the waterline in good condition however some re calking needed, on the starboard side problem areas have bean raked out, protside remains intact. deck and coach house Deck sheaved and painted in non slip international 2part deck paint, generally in good condition, small area on starboard side whare paint is coming off. Coach house, forward hatch, grab rails, gunnels, tiller and cockpit all varnished mahogany in good condition. bronze portholes sliding companionway hatch could do with some TLC. Engine, originally fitted with a stuart turner inboard, this was removed sometime ago, outboard bracket on stern, marriner 4hp sail drive outboard, this is included but I have not run it for 3 years so cant confirm it will work. Interior, 2 bunks, I have the cushions in blue corduroy but will need to dig them out as covers in storage. gas hob, never used, small sink not plummed in. interior needs some joinery doing and obvuose painting. Summery lovely little cruising boat that needs some work, this would be a fantastic winter project that I would love to get my teeth in to but just don't have the time. if you had basic boatbuilding/woodworking shills you could make this in to a very beautifull little yacht with minimal cash. I had a lot of fun with her in Chichester Harbour but sadly don't have the time to get her ship shape.... Must go to a good home this winter! Collection Currently lying out of the water in Bosham West Sussex, she is on a trolly but the buyer would need to have her lifted on to a road trailer, we have a local guy who would do this for around £150 (TBC) |
