Offered for your consideration is a custom built 38ft Lobster boat in the traditional Carroll Lowell style. This boat was built in 1988 on Chebeague Island near Long Island, Maine. It has been used commercially until last winter when I purchased it with my neighbor from the original owner who retired from lobstering after 33 years working on Long Island Sound. The diesel engine is a 400HP 1996 Lugger L6108. From what I have learned through research, Lugger is the Marine Propulsion equivalent of Northern Lights Diesel Generators. This particular model L6108 is a marinized Komatsu 6108 diesel. The hour meter is not presently working, but the last owner has informed me the engine has roughly 4000 hours since it's major overhaul. It is a commercial duty diesel which typically will run 12,000 hours plus. Please Google the make and model and read about how well regarded this engine is in the industry. The stainless shaft is 2 inches in diameter and turns a bronzit propeller. The motor starts and runs like a freight train. When you drop it in gear from neutral, it pulls like a tractor. Little smoke at startup clears right up after a few seconds. We have been using the boat all season and cannot believe how miserly it is on fuel. Although we have been told that the boat would approach 20 knots at wide open throttle, we have never run at more than 1700rpm. This was also the rule passed down from the previous owner. Typically we cruise around at 1200 making about 10 knots. It has a dry stack exhaust with a keel cooler, so no worries about winterizing or freezing. The boat can stay in the water all year. She is outfitted with a working 40 mile radar, a full color depth sounder/fish finder, two working GPS units, two working VHF radios, and a large Ritchie Compass. She has a brand new "D Cell" battery and a new spare hydraulic steering ram.The hull is constructed of 5/4 cedar as a workboat and is now somewhat tired and in need of cosmetics. The decks were fiberglassed over when new and remain solid to this day. There is some thinning of a number of frames aft, but the planking remains solid. She leaks a little bit with the bilge pump running about 10 seconds every 8 minutes. The bilge is fitted with two new Rule 2000 gph bilge pumps and float switches. One is for backup only. The hydro-hauler has been removed and sold as we were not going to be using it and were trying to reduce weight. There is a rear shelf on the boat for storing lobster pots. Originally were going to cut it off and restore the transom to a traditional look, but have come to like having the shelf. Great for holding the bar-be-que and for setting a few decks chairs out.
My plan when purchasing the boat was to clean up the topsides, put a fresh coat of paint on her, and enjoy it as a pleasure and fishing platform for all of our friends. We did enjoy it immensely this Summer. Check out my photos. At one point we had 16 people on board at our favorite swimming spot on the Connecticut River. I even had a custom awning made for the cockpit so that guests can relax out of the sun. Also installed a high quality stainless steel swim/dive ladder on the gunwhale. The boat is in the water now and still being used. Sadly, my neighbor is retiring to North Carolina and with one in college and another on the way, I cannot afford to maintain the slip and storage fees alone. This offering is being listed in true auction format with a $1.00 starting bid. This boat has beautiful lines, is great fun, and generates attention evrywhere it goes. She has many good years left in her yet to be enjoyed. Please contact me with any questions or if you'd like to see the boat. It is located in Old Saybrook, CT. Thank you for your interest and good luck bidding. Rich 860-662-9109
