For sale is a fine example of a South Wind motor boat designed and built about 1942 by the highly respected boat-builders A G Williams of Drummoyne, Sydney. Over the last three years, the boat has undergone a process of meticulous restoration, returning the vessel to a condition arguably as good as, if not better than, when it was originally built. Throughout the restoration, the main consideration was to preserve the integrity of the boat’s original design. However, over the years there have been many advances in the technology and materials related to the design and building of this type of boat, and where it was deemed appropriate, advantage was taken of any new methodology or material to produce a better result than would otherwise have been possible. An example here is the restoration of the timber hull, which was painstakingly renovated in accordance with accepted best practice. After the wooden hull had been completely restored using the traditional approach, due consideration was given to simplifying the future maintenance needed to keep the hull in good condition - historical solutions required ongoing contact with water to prevent shrinkage of the timbers. In the present situation, it was decided to enclose the restored wooden hull in a waterproof fibreglass sheath thus obviating the need for constant immersion, and this modification allowed the integrity of the original design to be preserved, and at the same time permitted extended removal of the boat from the water without any subsequent damaging shrinkage taking place. The following will give some indication of the work carried out on the boat: · The wooden hull was completely restored using traditional best practice and then further protected by enclosing it in a tough fibreglass sheath. · The cabin structure has been carefully restored/re-built in sympathy with the original design. · The teak planks, which form the upper deck, have been re-finished to a high standard. · The inboard Morris Navigator marine engine (fitted to the boat originally), was not available and in spite of extensive enquiries it was not possible to locate an identical replacement. It was decided to purchase a brand-new Yanmar engine 3YM 30 AE, which is capable of producing a power output of 29 HP at 3200 RPM. This engine has been installed and just needs some of its ancillary parts to be connected. Detailed instructions are included. All of the parts necessary were purchased with the engine and will be included in the sale of the boat. · The power train from engine to propeller is in perfect condition and should not cause the purchaser any problems. The vessel comes with an appropriate trailer (see photo) and the width of the boat and trailer is low enough so that when the boat is transported by road it does not require ‘wide load’ consideration. The cabin floor requires some very minor carpentry for completion and I can provide a matching door to seal off the rear section of the cabin (if required). Any handyman should be able to complete these basic tasks. Throughout the restoration I kept a pictorial record showing what was happening at each stage. Prospective buyers are welcome to look through these photos to see how thorough the restoration has been. I am selling the boat because I will not need it as part of the lifestyle change I have planned. I don’t go fishing off shore anymore, and my children are now grown up with families of their own and they have their own ideas regarding recreational activities. I am selling this boat as a project that is very close to completion. It is not being sold as a boat that can be launched immediately without the final work required being carried out. The final work needed to complete the project is very straightforward . All the hard work has been done and there have been no cost-cutting short cuts taken.
