Category: Sailing Boats
Class:
Description Year: 1951 Type: Cruiser Hull Material: Wood Make: Goshawk Rigging: Sloop/Cutter Model: Porpoise Keel: Fixed Use: Salt Water Length (feet): 27 Engine Type: Single Inboard/Outboard Beam (feet): 6 Engine Make: Vire 12
"TANTINA" was one of just five of class built in Gosport in 1951 by Goshawk, one of which was reportedly sailed in the early Fastnet races.
She has the unusual feature of reverse shear, allowing reasonable headroom below deck, and responsible for the class name "porpoise". Very similar to a folkboat, but a little faster.
The hull is mahogany carvel planking on oak frames, with a long iron keel.
The original doghouse has been extended to a full length cabin, and a counterstern added. A Vire 12 two stroke petrol engine replaces the original Stuart Turner.
She has been in the present ownership for more than half her life, and is being regretfully sold to upgrade to a larger vessel. The standing rigging has not been replaced in the 35 years that I have owned her.The mainsail is 15 years old and needs a service, the working jib is 6 years old and in good condition, and the genoa might even be the original. There is also a spinnaker. The engine has run very sweetly for the past few years. It has recently been serviced by VireUK. Right now the engine is at my home for the wintering. I am afraid the last real survey was about 17 years ago, in France. I did request a fresh survey about 5 years ago, and sent the surveyor the previous papers to help him, but he never came and never returned the papers. I have sent a request to him, but I have doubts as to whether he will find them.
She has been sailed widely in UK and continental waters, sails well to windward, and her beautiful lines attract regular attention. Alongside at Titchmarsh Marina and ready to sail away.
