Believed to have been built in by Horsham's Yard at Boulter's Lock on the Thames in 1951, Shirley Temple had been in regular use on the river until 2003 when, in need of what appeared to be 'light refurbishment', she was purchased by 2 friends - one a retired cabinet maker and the second a retired Royal Engineer, both of whom were looking for a new project having already restored a number of classic Riley motor cars.  20 feet long with a 6 feet beam and with her original Stuart Turner 8 BHP 1500 Marine Engine (with reverse gear and electric start) it soon became evident that major work was required if the boat was to return to her former glory.  While the engine was removed and fully restored by a retired ex-Stuart Turner engineer, it was decided to restore the boat using traditional classic boat standards rather than the more economical shortcuts often employed in modern restorations.  Accordingly, the following work was undertaken:The BoatNew Bottom - Double Diagonal Mahogany PlankingNew Oak Prow and Stern Transom Mahogany Bottom Boards Oak Laminated KeelMahogany Side Boards (where required) replaced Top Boards replaced in mahogany (where required)Epoxy Resin Seal (2 coats) to Keel, Bottom and Sides (to Rubbing Strake)2 Pack Primer to Keel, Bottom and Sides (as above)2 Coats of Marine Gloss Black Top Coat to BottomMarine Primer to Sides2 Coats of Burgundy Undercoat (Original Colour) to Sides3 Coats Marine Gloss Burgundy Top Coat to Sides8 Coats Marine Varnish to Top BoardsNew Copper Keel StripNew Rudder Pulley Support BlockNew Engine BearersNew Exhaust DownpipeAll Internal Wood Sealed with Epoxy Resin and Painted (2 Coats Undercoat, 2 coats of Bilge Paint)New Pram Hood in Water-proof Canvas with clear rear window and hood cover (vinyl)The EngineNew Piston Rings and Gaskets variousNew CoilsSpark PlugsNew Condensers and Distributer CoverOriginal Water pump RefurbishedThroughout the restoration the boat was independently surveyed for insurance purposes by Colin Messer (Clewer Boatyard - traditional boat restorations).'Shirley Temple' is now offered for sale after many happy seasons on the Thames and in excellent condition, complete with (purpose built for her in 2007) De Graff Twin Axel Trailer, heavy-duty Trailer Lock and full heavy duty canvas cover.  She also comes complete with a full photographic history of the restoration (hard copy and disc) as well as the original engine documentation and a comprehensive inventory of the work carried out.'Shirley Temple' has been a wonderful boat in which to explore the Thames and continues to turn heads wherever she goes.  Winner of the coveted Peter Freebody Trophy for best amateur restoration in 2007 and the Stuart Turner Trophy for best restored engine, she is an elegant, reliable and well regarded boat, is easily transported and has given us hours of enjoyment on the water; we will truly be sorry to see her go.    Please do not hesitate to call for further information (07717 887443) or to arrange a viewing in Devizes Wiltshire. Please note that she is advertised elsewhere and may be removed from sale if a sensible offer is made. A deposit of £500 will be required within 24 hrs of purchase.Current Owner is a member of the Classic Motor Boat Association.
