We have created a website with full details of the boat and many more images at www.dutchbargeunicorn.wordpress.com This sale is for an 18 year old Branson Boats replica Dutch Barge called "Unicorn". Please read the whole listing carefully. The boat was professionally fabricated from a Branson kit in 1998 and is powered by a Perkins 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine. She also has a Perkins 4-cylinder 30 KvA diesel generator. She was originally built to a lined sail-away stage and sailed from her place of fabrication to Newark, where she was used as a floating office with one large open space until we purchased her in 2007. Our intention was originally to fit out the boat to our specification to create a home and we started by dividing up the space and adding a galley. We also had a Sidepower bowthruster fitted. The bowthruster needs two batteries, connection to the engine charging system and a controller. A control cable is supplied but not yet fitted. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much as far as we got. Part way through our refit we had family problems lasting several years, with parental illness including dementia and eventual loss of both my parents, while trying to run a business at the same time. This impacted heavily on progress with the boat so the refit ceased and the project lay dormant. Now further down the line, we just don’t have the time now to devote to the boat, as work demands have changed and running our respective businesses is taking all our time. Therefore, we have reluctantly decided to sell our boat so that she can be finished by somebody who is able to complete the job and bring her to the level that she deserves to be at. She is being sold as a project needing either completion or treating as a blank canvas to create your own layout. Unicorn is 66ft long by 13.5ft wide with a rear wheelhouse. She has a stern deck locker which is big enough to climb down into and move around in and a smaller bow deck locker. She was constructed from 13/6/4mm steel. A potential buyer had her hull surveyed in March 2017 and we learned from the surveyor that the hull is in very good condition except for a small patch of about 10" long by 2" wide that has dropped to 4.8mm in thickness at the water line toward the stern on the starboard side. Advice given is that, if regularly blacked as it should be, it will be fine for many years to come and will not be a problem for insurance purposes but, if left unblacked, it will need plating over in about ten years’ time. We were also advised that welding a D-bar rubbing strake around the stern and over the patch will eradicate the problem at minimum cost and will do away with the need to overplate at a later date. The engine and generator are both currently running from slave tanks, as the fuel tank is large and we didn’t want to risk having unused diesel in there which could develop diesel bug while standing. The fuel pipes will need reconnecting and the fuel system bleeding back through. That’s not a big job. The engine and generator are estimated to have run for less than 100 hours, are both keel-cooled and are in good order, except for the starter motor on the engine. I allowed the prospective buyer to bring her down from her Lincoln mooring to Newark for the survey, which proved to be a mistake as, despite already being a boat owner and assuring us that he understood diesel engines, he managed to starve the engine of fuel en route and burned out the starter motor through excessive over-cranking in trying to restart her. The sale to this person has since fallen through after we discovered, following 9 weeks of promises, running around for him and being misled, that he didn't actually have the funds to make the purchase in the first place. I am happy to discount the price of the boat by the £500 it will cost for the marina to replace the starter motor. They say there is nothing else wrong with the engine. A Victron Quattro 12/24v inverter managed the power supply to the boat and has always worked perfectly. However, on a recent test it was showing an overload fault, which we think may be because there are no storage batteries currently connected for it to relay charge to. The inverter was top of the range when we purchased it and cost over £2,500, so is worth getting checked out. Unicorn is also advertised on Apollo Duck. Unicorn is now on hard standing in Newark, Nottinghamshire where she can be viewed and also surveyed if required.
